Oh my - those salary negotiations

It is Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. I can’t help but remember the TurkeyTalk phrase during a job interview I did back in 2006.

“Be thankful for the opportunity”. This is a phrase that I heard over and over again in my career.

For a long time, I believed that I should accept opportunities and simply consider myself lucky. Lucky that someone has taken a chance on me.

The journey from “I feel lucky” to “I deserve it because I worked so HARD” has taken many years. I am still learning...

In October of 2006, I was interviewing for a Product Manager role.

When the question about salary expectation came, I simply said "I am so lucky to be considered for this opportunity. I made $x in my last role."

Just as I was finishing my sentence, my interviewer told me, great, let's start you with that and we will talk Turkey in 6 months.

Guess what that Turkey Talk never happened” and it never does.

Humility is one thing and naivety is another.

Do your research, know the data and know your worth. Then ask for it. If you don’t ask, you won’t get it. It is as simple as that.
