On May 27th, we invited Marian DeSouza-McAllister, who is a Creative Director at Studio by Harlow. Over the last 15 years, Marian has lived and worked in many countries, as a media and design expert. Her prior initiatives include work for luxury brands and niche clients including Adidas, Lululemon, Disney, Ralph Lauren & more. Marian has always been passionate about sustainable & inclusive design and creating platforms for WOC.

The one takeaway Marian had from her journey is that: Design Inclusivity is a daily call to action. For Marian, sustainability, inclusivity, and progress, in media and digital design go hand-in-hand. As a member of the tech /design community and a WOC, there is a responsibility to help to improve the environment for growth and accessibility to opportunities for the community she belongs to.
Some of our learnings included:
Identify groups that are being systematically and historically excluded, along with industrial complexes that were historically structured and are still being used. Come up with daily small actions to help out.
Impart your knowledge, mentor people who have fewer skills and experience than you. Even if you feel your skill is easy to learn. The support system around us when we learn is just as important.
Stretch the scope of what is “normal” for your company, org, or project. Review whether your project is representative of all relevant audiences, not just the perceived ones that were given to you. Always be on the lookout for more sustainable models to create your new project.
